Bulgaria became a communist country under Soviet control in 1946 and remained under communism until 1989.  It became a parliamentary republic and made sweeping but difficult changes.  It joined NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007.  The country uses the Bulgarian lev rather than the euro.

Bulgaria has a population of 6.4 million, and its capital, Sofia, has about 1.5 million residents.

Our trip to Bulgaria was in July 2004, and we spent most of our time with our friends in the capital.
