Life of the rich and famous

As we were approaching retirement from Saudi Arabia, we began looking for a place to live.  While our focus was on the United States, we also considered international destinations.  We had a few friends who had either retired to the Dominican Republic or had homes on the island waiting for their exit date.  In January 2006, we flew to the DR and stayed at our friends’ beachside apartment in Cabarete.  We also visited and stayed in other towns and cities during our trip.  While we didn't end up retiring in the DR, we loved our time there.  Glenna has returned a few more times and has plans to visit again in the future.

The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti. It has a population of 11.6 million, with a capital city of Santo Domingo.  Christoper Columbus arrived in 1492, and it became Spain’s first colony in the Americas.  It gained its independence in 1844 and was occupied by the US from 1916 to 1924.  It now has a very stable government and has the fastest-growing economy in the Caribbean.

It was pretty nice waking up to this every morning
