In the old town
We visited South Africa at the end of December 2006. We were living in Saudi Arabia at the time and had a two-week winter break. Most of our time was spent in Cape Town, but we also took trips to the wine region, the Cape of Good Hope, and other areas around the south.
The food, people, music, and geography were incredible, and we feel so lucky to have been able to go to this part of the world.
However, it is a country with a very big racial gap in wealth. The whites make up about 7% of the total population in South Africa. Yet, they own over 70% of the country’s wealth.
Black households own only about 5% as much wealth as the typical white household.
Lots of boats docking and people coming ashore to eat and shop
Traditional dancers and musicians set up for the Christmas tourists
A street in old town next to our hotel
Everyday is hard
Some of the local homes and shops
were very colorful
Street musicians on the streets, parks and waterfront
For most of the performers and musicians, it was economic survival.
